Clayoquot Sound is the stage where environmentalists and the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations parked themselves in the tops of 500-year-old trees for months in one of the highest-profile wilderness protection efforts in Canada. In 1993 856 people were arrested for their involvement in the protests and blockades, the largest peaceful civil disobedience in Canadian history. There are two fishing villages -- Tofino and Ucluelet -- on either side of Pacific National Park. There is also a fast-growing tourism business, bringing nature lovers from all over the world. The most famous beach in British Columbia is also here -- the 13,715-hectare Long Beach, a surfer's heaven. This made it difficult to photograph the area as much as I would have liked, but I still made the best of it. A few of these photos were taken from other trips last year with my Nikon N65.
