Meisel's Fabrics

New Orleans, Louisiana

Funny thing about this sign, I didn't find it until about a month after I started
this photo series...and it is a block away from my house! Funny how you take
things for granted that you see everyday. This sign hang over a building on
Oak Street uptown.

other sizes: small medium large auto

I must make a comment on this sign

I did my Dermatology residency at Tulane and Charity Hospital between 1986 and 1989.. I used to live on DUBLIN very close to OAK for two of my 3 years in New Orleans..

Oak was a center of commerce so to speak and at night entertainment etc

One day I walked into Meisels to ask if they sold buttons for a shirt that got damaged by the dry cleaners on WILLOW street.. When I walked into the store--- I was greeted by Mr Meisel and old man with a very thick european accent---

Asked about the buttons--

and he showed me the display case and pointed to what I needed---

as he pointed with his right arm-- I couldnt help but notice that he had a CONCENTRATION CAMP NUMBER TATTOOED on his arm..

So you were in the camps MR MEISEL??

VHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ZHE CAMPS YOUNG MAN?? he said

well I am jewish and have had relatives with the same kinda tatooes - -I said...

Kind of sent a shiver up and down my spine

I dont know when he died--- but I will never forget MR MEISEL as Long as i live..

and hopefully his sign will be up for all to remember him- and what he obviously endured
