Northern Dusky Salamander Larva - Desmognathus fuscus

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

The Northern Dusky is a plethodontid (lungless) salamander, often found in and around rocky streams along with Two-lined Salamander. This is a larva about to change into a young adult. Note the tiny, whitish tufts on either side of the neck, which are all that remain of the gills.
