We were in Washington for the peak of huckleberry season, and they were everywhere. The red variety seemed the most common, but we found plenty of blue ones also. At first, I was eating only the red ones (which had kind of a tart flavor like a red raspberry) and avoiding the blue ones, which I found to be bitter. Later, when we encountered a huge patch of perfectly ripe blue huckleberries high on a mountain, I discovered that blue huckleberries are in fact the tastiest, sweetest berries I have ever had.
