Paul's suggesion for doing pan shots on race cars.
A shutter speed of 1/320 is near ideal as it is fast enough
to give a reasonably sharp subject, yet give enough
blurr to the wheels and background. Slower shutter speds
are great if you can hold the camera on one spot while
the car is flying past you. Shutter speeds faster than than 1/320
are very good for head on shots as you are not usually trying to
create the illusion of speed. 1/320 will cause the wheels to
be blurred while the car is sharp. When the car is coming past
is a side shot I try and hold the focus point on the number of
the car, as it is easy to pick out when a car is going past you
at a high rate of speed.
