CSRG Charity Challenge Vintage Racing
Sonoma Raceway, Oct. 3-5, 2014

First off I want to say that I am not a writer. I'm just an ignert 'ol Hillbilly. I am sure you will find plenty of grammar mistakes in this piece but so be it.
This summer I have been to a total of 6 sports car races. Early in the season I attended two NASA races at Miller Motorsports Park, then in July I attended the Soveren Vintage races at Pacific Raceway (see my gallery https://pbase.com/cartercreek/2014_sovren_vintage_races ). Then I attended the Utah Grand Prix. Pirelli World Challenge and NASCAR West at Miller and Then the CSRG Charity Challenge at Sonoma Raceway. For all the races I managed to obtain photo credentials and I would like to thank John Gardner, Miller Motorsports Park, Bob Pengraph for SOVREN and Llew Kinst of HMSA and last but not least Tom Frange of CSRG for granting this old man photo credentials even though I do not work for a media outlet.

Thursday morning 0500 my friend Larry Knight arrived at my house in a rental car that we decided to use for this trip. He obtained a 2014 Chevrolet Spank (at least that is what we called it) 1200cc's with a whopping 84 BHP We had so much stuff and we packed light that you could not see out the back window. The best thing I can say about the Spank is that we averaged 40 mpg running freeway speeds with the AC on full.

This was my first time at Sonoma Raceway; Larry had been at the track once very briefly. We arrived late Thursday afternoon and met Tom Frange and found a place to pitch our tent. We only had to move the bloody tent twice Thursday and Friday because of sprinklers watering the lawns. We finally found a place that they did not water, dry and rocky but no sprinklers and just yards from the track and turn 1.
We went because of the promise of vintage F1 and F5000 cars. We were not disappointed. I am not really sure as to how many cars they had entered but it seemed that most race groups had at least 30 cars. Constant racing from the get go.

I was so impressed with CSRG and the Charity Challenge that I hope to make this event next year. It is more than worth the ride in a cramped Chevy Spank. Also the club has enough class to pass out gift bags containing two bottles of NAPA Valley wine. I also want to thank Larry as I snagged his two bottles of wine as being a good Mormon he doesn’t drink. Thanks Larr.
