At each of the festivals, there is one particular character that merits singular mention. The Atsara or clown has one of the most arduous and complex roles to play. He performs throughout the day. The clown takes on the persona of "The Divine Madman" who abandoned all forms of conventional behaviour. The eccentric Divine Madman believed that phalluses or phalli warded off evil spirits. So the Atsara is often waving a gigantic wooden penis, teasing the crowd of giggling spectators and members of the dance or singing core. Westerns are not spared! He loves to mime people too and chase the women with this big bad stick in hand! He helps the performers dress and keep their masks secure or he's a brat and undoes a key ribbon! He's also responsible for ensuring the dance area is not encroached upon by the enthusiastic audience. The clown that I am honouring is Rinchen Dorji who is incredibly physically fit and an acrobat. Rinchen simply wants to help the local monks across the country earn a little extra income through his creative antics. Donations are always welcome at a festival. They help maintain the magnificent silk costumes and masks. In his professional life he is a freelance guide for tours, specializing in photography, trekking and motorcyclists!
