Tamblingan and Ulu Danu

Temblingan is 11 km north of Bedugul on a road which runs through the hill village of Wanagiri a side road goes off to the village of Asah Munduk, on the shores of Lake Tamblingan, which lies in a fascinating tropical landscape. On the shores of the lake is the temple of Pura Gubug Tamblingan, the ancestral temple of the Rajas of Buleleng.

Ulun Danu Temple is a floating temple. Pura Ulu Danu was built in the 17th century on highland Lake Bratan. It is one of the kayangan jagat (directional temples) which protect Bali from evil in all directions. This gemlike temple is half on the mainland, half on a tiny island. The complex is dedicated to Vishnu, the preserver and the god of water, in his guise as Dewi Danu, who protects all living creatures. There is more rainfall around Pura Luhur than anywhere else on very rainy Bali. This is where the orchids and the strawberries grow and butterflies live.
