We spent my birthday exploring a couple of the sites in the hills above Kiz Kalesi, Mersin, Turkey. We didn't know what an adventure we were in for. We drove the 7 kilometers to the parking lot for the Adamkayalar site (Men Rocks) to find some reliefs. A short distance from the parking lot we overlooked a beautiful gorge. We didn't know we would have to climb halfway down it to see the reliefs. The reliefs were used to honor the dead or missing. The persons on the couches usually represent the dead, but one relief is of a soldier saying goodby to his wife, daughter, and dog--he may not have returned. After climbing back out of the gorge we continued down the road and came across an old church and necropolis in Canbazli. The sign said: "The remains of Canbazli which lies on the ancient road between Diocasarea (Uzuncaburc) and Corycos (Kizkalesi)date from Roman and Byzantine periods." Amongst the abundant and scattered remains are temple-tombs, cisterns, rock-tombs, sarcophagi and this church. The Church of Canbazli dates from the second half of the 5th century its layout is of a basilica with three naves.
