This is an empirical test but, according to the results, very significant.
Shots made only at the extreme focals inside and outside the Nikon shop.

This is a valuable comparison. Thank you. I've been reading quite a lot about the 28-300 as I'm looking to buy an all round lens for travel / casual shots with a good zoom ability. I think this article is conclusive for me as on a D800 and considering I've never printed anything larger than a 20inch canvas or an A3 print using a Konica Minolta 10MP or D50 (both looking pretty decent at least), all this hype about this lens is sharper than that at the corners etc. doesn't make practical sense. I've seen some beautiful shots on Flickr even when zoomed in.

With such hi res cams and small print sizes (most photos are displayed online and last I checked we're displaying on average at about 2.5-3.5MP on screens these days), I'm going to snap this up. It will probably be replaced in 5 years or passed down to family so time to get out and start shooting.
