Day 4 - Unexpected Scimitar bill

The last day of the trip and this time we went a little earlier at 5:40 to get to the viewpoint in time. Waited at the km24 viewpoint for 1 1/2h and we saw many hornbills up on the mountain far above us. A couple of them came down to the trees above us but no one wanted to fly into the valley as yesterday. Patience will be needed to photograph these great birds, patience.

Up on the top we only got 2 hours and I parked the camera at the fig tree. Some Black-throated Laughingthrushes was entertaining with a lovely variety of sounds. After a while two of them came up into the fig tree, stayed for a short time and then went down again in a quite funny way, falling like leafs almost. This makes me wonder what's down there on the forest floor? Here I am watching the upper areas of the trees, but what's below on the ground I cannot see. Next visit I will try and get down there, somehow. I have to know.

After the activity slowed down I walked up and checked out the dry tall grass at the top where yesterday the starling showed up. Just a few bulbuls moving around but suddenly, a larger brown bird which looked just like a...Large Scimitar Babbler. He moved around quickly and it was difficult to get a good look at him even with the binocolors, not to mention taking a picture. After about 10 min of just seeing glimpses I figured out that he must go back to the forest and I walked over to the most likely place where the tall grass connected to the forest through some bushes. After just a few minutrs I could see him and I thought he was moving thrugh were I wanted. But not so, instead he took flight and flew right above me down to the forest. I looked over the steep edge and saw him moving around and then disappearing. Somehow it wasn't a goodbye, more like an aufwidersehen ("see you again" in German). Now for sure I have to get down there on the mountain side when such birds are around.
