Day 1 - The Hail Storm

At 6am the next morning we went up the mountain. At km24 a Crested Serpent Eagle was perched on a branch right above the road. Stopped at km27 and walked around some but only saw a flock of Black-throated Laughingthrushes. Continued to the top at Panoeng Thung where it was sunny and with a stunning view over the "sea of fog". Stayed at the viewpoint for a while and saw two Ratchet-tailed Treepies moving through the trees below. A male Orange-bellied Leafbird was singing his heart out from a treetop, very nice indeed. Bulbuls are plentyful here and a good place to photograph them since they are not afraid. Some White-browed Scimitar Babblers came through the vegetation. The Scimitar Babblers are a big favorite of mine and this mountain was yet to reveal a rarely seen scimitar bill.

Further down the road I heard a woodpecker with a slightly hollow sound. After a while I got a view of a little female Bamboo Woodpecker drilling a hole in the bamboo. First time I see this lovely woodpecker and I managed to get some photos for my species list. Just moments later a Great Hornbill comes flying right above me quite close. The sound from the wings are so loud it sounds more like thunder than a bird. I have to capture this on tape one day.

We continue the road until the end at km37 where there is a parking space and a trail to a waterfall. We went into the trail with only binoculars to check it out. Didn't see much, a Chestnut-breasted Malkoha and some Wreathed Hornbills flying close above. Plenty of leeches here though so we decided to go back. Later I heard that a Olive-backed Woodpecker had been seen at the parking.

At 3pm some of the darkest clouds I ever seen rolls in and the skies opens. From a sunny day with plus 30 degrees the temperature drops to around 16 in just a few minutes. After a while we can see hails bouncing around on the ground. It's raining ice! My wife have only seen this once before a 30 years ago. The strong winds breaks 8 of the 11 tents at the campsite as they were matches and despite standing under a large roof the strong winds blows up the mountain and sprays us with cold water. After an hour the storm settles and we goes down to the Bang Krang campsite.
