7 January, 2009: Classy Harry

My new old bike, a welcome addition to the little family! Nice ebay find, steel Harry Quinn road racing bike with classic bits, mostly Campagnolo. It is in pretty good nick, with some surface rust on the frame, seat stema nd pedals - the colour and decals look original, though. Looked high and lo for a serial no. but to no avail, but doesn't look like a fake - who would go throught he hassle of putting top bits on, then sell it on ebay for a rather moderate sum?

I don't really want to respray and don;t mind blemishes as long as I can stop it rusting further. I'd like it as an exercise /commuting bike and as we live in hilly countryside, I'd like to keep the gears. I'll change to a pair of 700 Mavic wheels once the rings have been respaced, it currently rund on its tubeless wheels. Most of the rust is coming off nicely with Autosol and LOTS of elbow grease, I grease a bit every night, having done most of the frame and really scrubbed the rust of those nice stainless steel lugs, now working on the wheels ;).

Wonder it Hammerite Anti0rust primer or perhaps white Hammerite paint is the way to go to touch up any rust bist where I need to file down to bare metal. Also, should I apply some sort of top coat, or would polishing it with car wax and/or alubricant be sufficient? Will turtle wax and GT85 go together? Should I put lubricant inside the frame?

Is there anything else I should be doing to keep the classic look? What is the best way to keep rust at bay? Would it be worth to touch up the frame? How could I date the bike? It was given to the previous owner in 1981, but was not new then.

If anyone has any useful advice, please let me know. Have already delegated some technicalities (truing wheels, adjusting brakes and derailleur) into capable male hands, and it is fit to ride, but I want it to be b-e-a-uti-ful!
