Dave Yates is one of the remaining framebuilders for bicycles in the UK. With carbon and titanium replacing steel on the high end, and aluminium and alloys replacing steel on the low end, and wages in the UK high, there is simply little market for fine handmade steel bicycles. Most people want a bike so cheap, or an all-singing, all-dancing one made from the latest carbon fibre. However, there just seems to be a market enough for cycling aficionados, or those who spend many hours in the saddle and appreciate a well-made, bespoke bicycle that is lightweight, sturdy and incredibly elegant and classy.
