Whatchamacallit -- Alias "The Pope Machine Rest"

Well, it is no longer a Whatchamacallit ! It has been identified as a product of Harry Pope a well known barrel maker. This was used at the breach end of the rifle while sighting it in. My friend (now deceased) at one time in his life was an 'instructor coach' for an American Legion Rifle team. Next photo shows it "in use."

What you have is a Front Muzzle rest for a Old Slug Rifle or Schutzen Rifle ! Harry Pope made them along with other's before 1900 and after . You use wood screw's to put it on the front of the Bench, then you set the Muzzle of the Rifle in the "V" and adj. for windage, and elevation. D.C. in S.C.
