Spring Stroll

A New Hampshire Black Bear out for an early morning stroll.
I'm not sure what this fellow is finding to eat in these lean days of early spring but
he looks pretty healthy after his winter denning.
I was about 150 feet away as he paused along this beaver dam. He never saw me, but soon after this shot he picked up my scent and disappeared quickly into the forest.
Black bears will lose as much as 20 perecent of their body weight during winter denning and spend much of the year gaining it back.
Makes me wonder how big he'll look come autummn.

He does look fit for this time of year.

150 feet is not far. Corageous of you to have the presence of mind to raise the camera. A fine image.

Wow, he looks huge! He does look healthy with shiny fur despite it being early spring.

He does looks like a big boy! I do worry about running into one of these guys when we take the dogs hiking in the woods in the Berkshires. I always forget to bring my bear spray with me.

A very nice up close of this healthy looking bear.

Fantastic. Given how big these guys are they are quiet in the woods and even in bear country no guarantees of seeing one. Fantastic early morning shot. VV

outstanding shot endows this big guy with such a mighty presence...it confounds expectations that such a strong creature will run from us puny humans..V

Great shot of this beautiful animal, and interesting that he disappeared when he detected you. Seeing this bear reminded me of a correction to an article I recently saw: "Editor's note: A previous version of this story stated that the bear is a brown bear. While it is a bear that is brown, it is not a brown bear; it is a black bear (that is brown). The story has been updated to reflect this."

My first thought was "Wow he's a big one!" Great shot of this shy creature.

Fantastic shot and encounter! We saw one when we visited running across highway 16 from Bear Brook. Always a great sighting.
