River

River is our 4th Border Collie. He was rescued from a shelter in Arizona in 2020, is 5 to 6 years old, and lives and plays in the high Rocky Mountains.
Nickname: Fuzz Butt
Favorite Things Order: Food, food, getting pets, hiking and walking.

River was too well known by the local shelter in Arizona. He and his brother and sister(non-BCs) repeatedly escaped their yard, "caused trouble", and did this enough times to be re-homed for the safety of the dogs, and the area livestock they reportedly were tormenting.
But it gets better, that family that couldn't contain their dogs had actually adopted River, from the same shelter! Yes, River was picked up as a stray previously, and adopted, and now back up for adoption.
So much excitement in this dog's first two or three years!!
Given his past, the shelter warned us repeatedly and offered him to us for free,(we insisted on paying) and also stressed that we could bring him back with no questions asked, because he was clearly going to be a handful. I wasn't convinced of this.

In the first 5 minutes being home, he bounded on top of our glass dining room table, and 3 years later and River has learned so, so much. River is a large-frame medium-drive Border Collie. He loves, loves, loves all dogs, loves, loves, loves kids, and especially food. He's a real snuggle bug too; a true velcro dog that doesn't want to be outside without his people. When we first got him he was afraid of men and women in uniform, or people carrying anything that resembled a catch pole....hmmm, I wonder why.

Beyond that, River is a pretty fancy boy. As you can see he has a light and dark eye, but also...
On his right front paw he has light toenails, and on the left, dark toenails.
He has only half of a white collar across the back of his neck, on his left side.
Even his whiskers and eyebrows are dark on one side and light on the other.
And lastly, everyone seems to love yelling RIVVVERRR when they see him.
This has certainly all gone to his head! :)

Ahh, thanks Helen. I love dogs, period, and especially all the herding breeds. So many great dogs and yet life is so short! LOL

River is a handsome boy, and you got a great shot and expression. We used to have an Australian cattle dog/border collie mix who we adopted while living in Canberra, and she was a marvelous companion. She acted more like a border collie than a blue heeler!
