Waiting to enter the lock at the mouth of the river. Lake Michigan is two feet higher than the Chicago River. Originally flowing into the lake, the river's flow was reversed
and now ends up emptying into the Mississippi. The Sanitary and Ship Canal was dug deeper than the river to accomplish this singular engineering feat. Since the Chicago River is
a "working" river, commercial traffic, including tour boats, have priority.
