This Chaco pot shard shows indentations made on the outside of the pot used in a fire for heating liquids. The purpose of the roughened surface was to improve heat conduction to the liquid, and to aid in lifting the pot using a forked stick. The fingerprint of the pot maker can be seen. The Chaco civilization ended around AD 1125, here at Chimney Rock in southern Colorado, as well as in Chaco Canyon in New Mexico.
