I've seen some pictures of men from the 78th infantry who have the carbine ammo pouch on the M1 garand.They used it to store the special rounds which they used to fire those rifle granates.

If you view the original of the photo, Andy, the guy just to the lieutenant's right rear has a carbine mag pouch on his M1 stock. I haven't seen that one before. And his T-handle is missing.

That cross is too big on the medic's helmet in the rear. He must have had that thing made up by toppots.
