Menorca – what can I say? A fabulously photogenic place and very enjoyable generally. It was our first visit to the island, and our first “villa” holiday. I can strongly recommend both.
I didn't see a single nightclub, and the only disco I noticed seemed permanently closed. There were a proliferation of very nice fish restaurants, and some very pleasant bars.
My enjoyment was, of course, much multiplied by the text messages from friends telling me just how wet it was in Yorkshire. There is something to be said for sitting under a sun shade, Gin in hand, reading about others meteorological misfortunes.
In addition to the weather Menorca is a very interesting island. It was the main Mediterranean base for the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars and the British left a fair few marks - sash windows in the main town, a very fine cheese and of course the Gin. Of other historical note are the well-preserved Bronze Age settlements around the island and the remains of an early Christian basilica. These and the various photographic distractions filled the periods between gins quite nicely.
On the subject of Villas I must mention the one we rented. It is privately owned by the Perry family, it was extremely well equipped, with a pool and located in a very quiet residential area. Ian Perry handled all the arrangements in a very professional manner, and provided us with an excellent guide to Menorca that he has developed over the years. Here is my plug: Details of the Villa (and booking instructions) can be found here http://www.menorcaholidayvilla.co.uk/index.html
