The ribstones are a set of quartzite boulders known as glacial erratics.
First Nations people chiseled symbols into the rock, petroglyps that are now 1,000 years old. These ribstones are especially revered as a grouping. They can be seen at their original location atop a hill in the rolling land near Viking, Alberta.
The long parallel grooves etched into the stone are believed to represent a bison's rib cage. The smaller pale stones were likely used in bison fertility ceremonies to encourage the appearance of large bison herds. The coloured cloths, coins, and sweet grass are part of the ritual of leaving gifts to ensure a good hunt or thanks for successful hunting.
