I am chasing up a minor, but interesting late 19th/early 20th century photographer Walter John Clutterbuck (1853-1937), who took photographs in Hong Kong & Japan, and published a book about the latter - one of many photo essay books on a remarkable diversity of places from British Columbia through Japan to Norfolk! His birth in September 1853 is registered in Chippenham and he is believed to have come from an affluent family. He died, I believe in Marsham Hall (death registered in December 1937 in Aylsham) and photographs and manuscripts of his are deposited in the Norfolk County Library in Norwich.
My sense is that he was a member of the Clutterbucks of Hardenhuish, but I have no solid evidence. Does any of you know whether Walter John was a member of this family?

Hello. I've just come across your comment. I'm Buz's cousin Frances Allen (née Filson) and our grandmother was Mary Hope Laetitia (known as 'Tish') Clutterbuck, the sister of Violet Clutterbuck, whom we all knew as Val. I just wanted to say that Val was one of the nicest people I have ever come across.

When my mother (Judy Greig) was a child, she spent a lot of time staying at the Vicarage in Kensington, where Val's husband, Ernest, was vicar. And when we were small, we often visited her, at Charmouth, Minchinhampton and then Amberley. I remember as a student turning up unannounced on her doorstep and she and Nanny behaved as if this was a treat for them.

Was your husband's father Phil or John Roberts? I didn't really know them; we had more contact as children with their sister Joan Ridley.

Hello - your photos are very interesting as my ancestors lived on this estate upto 1922.
My direct family ancestors (Clifford) worked on the Hardenhuish estate in the 1800s and lived in The Folly cottages and West Lodge - do you have any portraits of Louisa Maria Clutterbuck ne Spicer and her husband Edmund Lewis? - who were contemporary with my Great Great Grandfather. I am also interested to know why their son Edmund Henry had a nick name 'Go Go' - was he a fast runner? My impression is that The Clutterbucks were very benevolent kind people.

Hardenhuish School now occupies the House and Estate and we use this wonderful resource and the Church for our GCSE course "Local History" module. We have even excavated the old summer house. The pupils really enyoy this part of the course. We have a few historic photos and documents but the dicovery of this collection makes a wonderful additon to our resources. I note that a descendent of the Clutterbucks, gmarlingroberts, has posted a comment and mention that they have additional photos. we would love to get in contact with them. Is this possible?
