News Photo Editing

After the Gazette's redesign debuted in January of 2005 my job changed to primarily news photo editing and assignment editor. In addition to attending the morning planning meeting, I worked with editors and reporters to formulate art ideas, then tackled the logistics to get them shot and into the production flow so designers could have them to actually put them on the page when they were needed, whether for a daily breaking news page or feature pages planned days or weeks in advance.

Covering the news often meant changing plans repeatedly throughout the day, and the actual photos we ended up with at the 4:30 news meeting were often vastly different from the list of potential photo opportunities we started out the day with. Before the afternoon meeting I also went through the wire photo report from the AP, selecting the best photos for each story on their daily national and world news budget.

At the news meeting each local editor pitched their best stories for the front page and local section front. I presented my picks for the best photos from the national and local photo reports. Then the managing editor made the final decisions on story and art selection. Sometimes the photos I recommended ended up on the front page. Other times breaking news events into the evening meant more timely art turned up after I left for the day. The pages I present here represent instances where the next day's front page ended up pretty much as I intended.
