That was one of the first outings with the 16-35/2.8 lens. Wide angles are a lot more forgiving on DOF, yet I was still surprised at the range off focus. I _may_ have PP'd this to isolate the oblisk to give a bit more sharpening than the foreground, but if I did much wasn't needed. (IOW, yes, that's the right aperture setting for the shot).
As for the analysis, I find that very intersting. I wasn't thinking that far into it when taking and later processing the image - rather it just 'worked' for me. Your observations are appreciated.

The different ages of the different components of this picture makes for a nice theme. The obelisk is ancient, but the sun warming it is much much older - the plants are passers-by, and the flag will be gone in the blink of an eye.
Are you sure this was f5.6? With detail in the cloth and the obelisk in focus?
