Pine Grosbeak

Norfolk, Litchfield County, CT

Pinicola enucleator

Pine Grosbeaks are birds of the boreal forest. In years with poor crops of mountain-ash berries in Canada, as was the case in 2007, the grosbeaks move south into southern Canada and northern US, looking for alternative food sources. Crabapple seeds are a favorite.
