Piping Plover

Nickerson Beach, Nassau Co, NY

Charadrius melodus

Piping Plovers are named for their plaintive whistling call. They are the color of dry beach sand, and when still, can be difficult to spot. Increased ooastal development and recreational use of beaches have decreased the amount of available nesting habitat, resulting in a steep decline in numbers. They are now listed as endangered in NY, and efforts are being taken to protect and monitor their breeding sites.
