Colaptes auratus
A pair of Northern Flickers worked for days to excavate a nest hole, only to be evicted from it by European Starlings. Ironically, this tree is just yards from the Delacorte Theater, where in 1890, eighty European Starlings were released, and led to the permanent establishment of that species in North America.
To see this male flicker in the process of excavating, see http://www.pbase.com/btblue/image/60405125
