Colaptes auratus

A pair of Northern Flickers worked for days to excavate a nest hole, only to be evicted from it by European Starlings. Ironically, this tree is just yards from the Delacorte Theater, where in 1890, eighty European Starlings were released, and led to the permanent establishment of that species in North America.

What a beautiful woodpecker. Starlings are a pest, even here, where they are at least native. But as culture followers, they are better at adapting to the modern world as others. Did not know that they were intentionally released in Northern America. I just wonder about the motives for that, as starlings obviously have no immediate economic value (neither pet nor farm animal). Well, in 1890 nobody thought about the consequences.
