Unlike songbirds which have 3 toes in front and 1 in back, woodpeckers have 2 toes in front and 2 in back. This improves stability while clinging to vertical surfaces like tree trunks.

Super shot Lloyd. We had the first ever record for Alberta this winter, and I believe the bird is still around. I managed to see the bird both last year and this, and got some photos, but nothing nearly good enough to put on pbase
