But I fear that its partner may have been caught by a critter during the night.

Well I never! News of your hospitality has obviously spread! Hope the partner turns up....something caught one of a pair that visited our garden, evident by a pile of feathers found one morning...it was so sad to see the lonely one left afterwards. I don't think they are the niftiest birds.
