Tafoni Rock Formation

Did a hike from Sanborn County Park, above Saratoga, to the top of the Santa Cruz mountains today.

Here are some large sandstone rocks which have large cavities inside of them. They
are created by a process called cavernous weathering.
Acidic water soaks into the sandstone and dissolves the calcite cement to create these large cavities.

The larger rocks in this area are popular for rock climbing.

Very good shot with the moss covered rocks as the center Bryan.

Very lush with those moss covered stones and ferns. You can smell the fresh air in this photo Bryan. The Smokys won't look like this again until April and I probably won't be hiking again until March. :^)

Beautiful photo with nice composition of those green cavities.. hmm. sounds like tooth cavities :) I hope the big rocks for climbing dont have these green thing. Otherwise it's quite dangerous. It's slippery for them.

Interesting. We have sandstone rocks here that do the same thing. I don't know about climbing them. They do tend to crumble. I love the moss and the green trees. A real pick me up on this gray morning.
