Tufa towers of Mono Lake

view map

The Tufa towers consist of calcium carbonite minerals which grew when they were under the alkaline lake water surface.

The lake levels were declining due to Los Angeles diverting the fresh water streams from the lake.

Due to legal battles, Los Angeles was force to partially replenish the lake levels.

The lake is a home to many migratory birds feeding on the brine shrimp in the lake.
