Maybe you don’t know it, but Torino, the town where I live is the kingdom of chocolate. Swiss? No, chocolate is from Torino!! In 1600, the city was already producing 350 kilos of chocolate a day for export throughout the whole of Europe. The art of the master Turinese chocolate makers stems from an ancient tradition and passion that has been handed down through the centuries. |
At first it was a drink. Cacao had been imported from Spain since the time of Emanuele Filiberto, but in the year 1678 the Madama Reale Giovanna Battista Nemours made it officially legal to drink the substance. Later in the 18th Century chocolate artisans began to solidify chocolate into bars, and a number of great chocolate factories sprang up, such as the Caffarel where the Swiss came to learn the art. In 1865, however, came the invention of the gianduja – the most famous chocolate of Piedmont, made from chocolate and toasted hazelnuts. Today the tradition of gianduja chocolates and giandujotti is as alive as ever. The art of chocolate making is celebrated in Torino each year with a joyful outdoors fair. All kinds of delicious chocolates are kindly offered to vistiors and there is a full choice of entertainment for children and adults. After all adults become children again, when they smell chocolate and enjoy its taste. In spite of my age which makes of me more than just "adult", I had a lot of fun visiting the chocolate fair, even though I had to prevent myself from gulping down all those tempting chocolates which would have not been suitable for my health. Nevertheless I could enjoy myself taking some photos and having a deep immersion in the festive atmosphere. The weather was glorious too. Very probably my photos are far from the high level of the chocolate, but it’s the only way I have to share my impression with you. |
