New Hampshire, The White Mountains, so named by colonial sailors who saw the white peaks through the winter from Portland, ME. They are not usually "big" looking, because the glacier's retreat scoured them greatly, but many of them provide some serious hiking and climbing that is actually more demanding than larger western mountains. I've heard of Coloradons scoffing at these "rolling hills" only to be huffing and puffing and falling way behind their east coast friends due to the steepness and ruggedness of the trails. The hike to the summit of Angels Landing in Zion is almost wheel chair accessible. I tried to capture both the falling hail and the steepness of the trail in the South Twin trail photo. The trail is 1,100 feet up over 8/10 of a (horizontal) mile. It's like an hour on the stair master with a twenty pound (or more) load on your back and steps that vary from six inches to three feet. (Actually a stairmaster is easier because the steps give away.) I have so many more photos from here that I have to look through and post.

Just wondering about this location...East, West, the mountains look a little big to be East.
