Reading the Battlefield guide again and listening to the audio tour CD, I see that both are long on anecdotes and short on straight numbers. I think it would be fair to say that between 5,000 and 6,000 casualties (North and South combined) were suffered in and near this cornfield over the course of 4 1/2 hours on the morning of September 17, 1862.
