This cicada says "Happy Birthday, Karen!"

After viewing Russ P.'s cicada gallery I was inspired to look for some live ones myself. The Coolpix 3100 doesn't do well in macro mode outside. The focus always seems to be on the background. It doesn't matter where you aim the camera. Close enough.

Mostly I'll be shooting with my new D70 which arrived to day. Hopefully it doesn't have those focus problems so talked about on the DPreview forum. Here's my first shot with it.

Nikon Coolpix 3100
1/60s f/5.6 at 5.8mm iso100 with Flash full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Ewww. Ewww. Ewww. I'm really trying to AVOID up-close-and-personal encounters with these things. Weird thing is that while there here where I work, and on the way to work, as close as 7-10 miles to my house, AT my house, there's nary a one. I fear it won't remain that way.

Was this the kind of roach on my wedding cake? I thought it was a fly. And you both took pictures of it instead of taking it off the cake. I still hear people raving on how delicious that cake was. If they only knew. Thanks for the happy birthdays.

His face is blury but you sure can see detail in his wing. Interesting looking little dude! I wish I could find a bug like this to photograph. You should re-visit this someday with your new camera. Congrats!

Lou, this was shot with the Coolpix. One additional problem the Coolpix had was that this little sucker was climbing towards the lens. Maybe the focus was right a moment ago? But I had lots of trouble with it.

Yep, a pity the close-up doesn't works too good. The D70 has same problems if he finds another straight line to fix too, but here there was enough good lines in the foreground and this had certainly been mastered in a fine way by the D70. For sure, the lens on the D70 is not a Makro lens and to get a shot in this style you need a Makro Lens. Sigma's 105 mm Makro lens performs excellent for this purposes.
