April 14, 2004

Every time I look hard at the features of DSLRs I find myself wishing for a digital F100. Nikon's top cameras might feel similar and have fast autofocus, but the D100 and the D70 and Fuji S2 have slower autofocus and feel wrong. The viewfinder views on these digitals, including the Canon D-Rebel and 10D are very small. I like the big, bright viewfinder in the F100. It's not the greatest camera ever, but the most comfortable one I'll held for less than thousands of dollars. The temptation to just buy something new is great, especially doing photo a day. The limitations of the Coolpix 3100 can really be frustrating. I always have to change the batteries in mid-shoot after I've got it locked down on the tripod. :) But I'm going to try to resist those temptations and shoot more film! Alongside the Coolpix.

The ghosting you see on the Nikon and F100 labels is caused by my heartbeat. I put the camera on a monopod for steadiness, but noticed my whole body pulsed just a bit right to left with each beat. I couldn't get it below one beat per 1/10 second! I'm not sure I'd want to. The focal length used is equivalent to 135mm in 35mm format. Something wider might not have magnified the movement so much. But I wanted a tight shot.

I'd have bought an EOS 3 or maybe a 1v by now had it not been for digital. I think we're at the 'almost there' stage in the evolution of the DSLR. I'll be happy to use my lowly 300D until Canon brings us large viewfinder with eye controlfocus. Oh, and is an extra stop of dynamic range too much to hope for?

Mark, I have to say that you make magic with the coopix 3100! The quality and standard of your photography with it is marvellous - a sign of someone who really knows their stuff!

Go with what makes you happy!

I really miss my Canon AE1. It was stolen, and I've never been happy with my cameras since then. I have just a simple point and shoot and I hate it. I miss having a camera with different lenses. If you don't mind, I think I'll dream with you.

Sounds like torture...testing driving and then returning. It's nice photo to hang up on a wall to remind you to save your pennies to get the F100. Fun shot!

Nice shot, Mark. I can't comment on the digital/film camera issues having never shot film... but you get amazing, amazing results with the 3100!

Brilliant image, i must admit i do not regret the purchase of my d100, i love the camera to bits.
Trouble being i have never used a film SLR so i am learning as i go, in fact i have just bought a F65, cant wait to get my hand on it!

Love the crop and composition, this would make a perfect cover image for a book on photography!

I'm fairly new to photography but a camera is a tool used to acheive something we all feel is more important than the tool itself and it is dificult to change a trusted tool. I have been a guitarist for 35 years and can relate on that level as well I have collected 7 main tools there and they vary in age and capability. I guess what I'm trying to say is the result is what counts and yours are pretty darn good.

Smiled when I saw this. I learned on a Nikon (same model I believe) .. So far so good on my Pro-1... (tho, it is a first generation type.. I'm still biting my nails on it a bit) D-70 got good reviews at C-net yesterday. I do still miss my old Pentax..

jypsee, probably you're going on because I went ON on your page today. LOL! Digital has its advantages, to be sure. Doug, yeah the full frame Canon and Kodak probably have bigger viewfinders, why not just magnify the image in the lower-end models? I can't spend $7,000 on a toy. :) Plus I'm all set up with Nikon lenes.

Shut up Jeanne, you'll make me want one. My "bad self" LOL. I needed a photo!! And a reason for it.

Get over your bad self!! LOL!!

No really, You and DM talked it over in NYC. YOu know what you want. You should wait.

I have fallen in LOVE wth what I have. Tonight I met the D70 (Larry Bosworth came over) and as much as it seems really nice, I am still SOOOO happy I have the D100!

Cool shot, Mark! Keep on rockin' that Coolpix!

This has to be a first, I don't recall ever having seen a heartbeat captured and presented on Pbase before! - Well done and keep with the film if it makes you happy.

Very well shot!!!

Mark, What about the Canon 1Ds I wonder if the viewfinder is better because it is a full frame sensor?. Is the Nikon D1h a full sensor dSLR? it is also like $7000
jypsee15-Apr-2004 03:23
Hmmmm....I'm NEVER going back. My belief is that dslr's will make better photographers faster than film ever did because of the immediate feedback on technique (if the camera isn't used as a P&S, but as a SLR). I manage the viewfinder thing ok...and any bad pictures just get deleted. I've had vision issues for years so I hardly notice that I can't see what I'm photographing :^) oh, yeah...I just bought another digicam to keep in my purse....why am I telling you this?????
brother_mark15-Apr-2004 03:16
Let's hope I can wait patiently. The EOS 3 and the F100 are very similar...almost the same specs. No wonder you like it. :)
Guest 15-Apr-2004 03:11
I like this shot!!!!! And I agree about the viewfinders -- my D60 has the same viewfinder as the 10D which is pretty small, especially compared to the huge bright one in my EOS 3 which is wonderful! I love that camera and I feel bad that I don't shoot it more often. Nice looking set up you have there! I think you're being smart - you know what you want and you're going to wait patiently until you find it. Good for you!
