January 14, 2004

This is two photos in one. I really liked Larry Bosworth's photo of his shoes--waiting. And Linda Alstead's image of her kitten heels. These are my favorite casual dress shoes--Timberland Altamont PTOs. They are more comfortable than sneakers and dressier. And worlds more comfortable than kitten heels. Here, I'm tying the laces at what is probably a Series S hydrant, at Eastern Market early this morning. This hydrant doesn't have a manufacturer's name on it. It may just be a copy of A.P. Smith's popular model--the O'Brien 1 piece barrel model. Once the patent expired this design was imitated by at least 15 other manufacturers. Not exciting, but functional, I guess.

I passed an American Darling (Valve) hydrant on the way to this shot. I'll save it for a rainy day. My last fire hydrant for a while, maybe. Really these green ones are boring. So many look so similar. My idea came from my encounter with this one across the street from the National Archives. It really is worth a look! Decent composition, close-up, shallow depth of field, and B&W. Truly art. ; )

Like this image, Mark - the DOF is right on, the lighting creates some very pleasing shadows, and I love the way you've cropped it. Your addition of the shoe is wonderful - gives it that "caught in time" feeling. Well done! :)

hey, I'm an inspiration! Cool! This and the other fire hydrants are excellent. BTW - the kittens.....you assume we girls wear them for comfort? Nope - there is something about putting on a pair that just makes you feel good. That's more than just a foot thing. You feel like a million dollars and if there is a little discomfort in the ball of the foot it quickly disappears in the overall aura of wellbeing.

Live and learn. Still a good start. I also like the angle on this one.
Before I forget, here's your eggs...;)

Thanks Rob. I think I should have zoomed out a bit, too. It is really hard to see what you've got on the little screen in bright sun. Maybe I shouldn't have been tying them in the photo.

I like the chipped paint and the lighting. I think it needed more of the shoe in the picture though as your hands are chopped a little awkward.
