January 6, 2004

I started out with a much different idea about how this vase ought to be photographed. It was a lot of trouble to set up and photograph in my tiny place. In the end this began to reveal itself to me. Much simpler. The vase is marble with fossilized bits in it. Correction, it's from Pakistan. I was thinking last night about the vendor and his accent and face came to me. I bought it for between $15.00 and $30.00 at Eastern Market--a Capitol Hill weekend arts, crafts, antiques and farmers market a short walk from my condo. (I meant for this to be a square crop. I see I missed. I'll fix it later.)

This is a striking image Mark. Nicely executed.

Thank you all for your compliments. They mean a lot coming from so many good photographers. (I'll make the rounds through your galleries this weekend.)

I'm pleased this has held your attention for so long, Ruth. The vase itself is worth studying. I need to get to the Freer Gallery of Art Saturday to see an exhibit about to leave and check out their postcards of vases, etc. to see if they have no catchlights on the polished objects.

This shot is beautiful. I have stared at it now for about 5 minutes -- not good, considering I'm checking this site out at work! I love the smooth contours of the vase contrasted with the slight imperfection at the bottom of the shot on the rim of the vase. The lighting is fabulous!

How did I miss this? Excellent photo.

This is great Mark both the subject and the shot. Facinating... looking at something like this is not enough, I want to touch it and feel it and explore every inch of it! I think for $30 you have a bargain.

Very nice... much better than the other one although I like the idea of shooting a 'framed' setup. Try again with another subject.

Beautiful composition, Mark, and that vase looks gorgeous! YOu got a bargain, there!!

You certainly nailed THIS one, Mark! ZOIKS!! Love the perspective of this and the deep shadows. Agree (again) with Ray that it's remarkable that you have virtually no hot spots to contend with, here. Very, very nicely done, man. Oh... and I LOVE the square, tight crop on this - perfect complement for the image. :)

You've got to click on the other link, Jeanne! A $14.99 20 watt halogen reading lamp from Ikea. It clamps onto a book shelf or in this case a music stand with a thin book on it for something to grip.

Glad you hardly got any hotspots - they are such a nuisance. Really good shot.

Wow! Nice job! What did you use to light it?
