Very nice - composition and everything very right in this image.

Sensational photo - you share your sister's eye for a good composition! The juxtaposition of the hardness of the ironwork and the softness of the rose delivers a texurally wonderful feel.

Rob, I know, with a D-SLR the stakes are higher. The thing I have to try working on is lighting and composition. Creativity doesn't come with a camera. I'll be working on that this year. Points I have less control over, like DOF, will have to wait.

This is a great image. You could just give up now a get a DSLR with a slew of lenses.:D I did and it hasn't helped. I just expect more from myself.

Keep going. If this is any indication, you've got a great eye for both composing and cropping.

Thank you Larry, Jacquie and Patrick. Yes, I see there's much new learning to do with digital. I'm not yet real eager to do it. You'll see today I looked at D-SLRs. I'll probably get an S2 in the spring if the price drops.

Nice contrast! Beautiful picture!

Mark, I can see that you are HOPELESSLY destined for a digital SLR, along with endless books, tips, tricks and lessons in Photoshop - so you may as well give it up! :> Think of Photoshop as your own personalized photo lab, where you can eek out every possibility (and then some!) from your "digital negative." Be patient with yourself - for deeply entrenched film buffs, the migration to digital is difficult. The translation from one to the other is most definitely NOT one-to-one - and I'm sure you'll find that some "unlearning" and "relearning" will be needed. ;) That said, your thorough knowledge and depth of experience of the both the mechanics and aesthetics of good photography will definitely pay off in the end.

In spite of the narrow tonal range of this shot - and your other perceived annoyances ;) - it's a very artistic image that conveys significant impact to me, as a result of the stark contrast of both tone and texture. You've also created a very strong composition by virtue of your crop. Very nicely done, Mark! ~Patrick

I didn't like it in color. Some of the leaves were brown and seemed distracting. I'm not pleased with the B&W because the tonality sucks. (I can say that about my own photo, right?) Normally I would leave it to the lab to get better gray tones. I'm clueless in photoshop. I could crop it a million ways, there's quite a bit more photo. I liked the wrought iron stairs and the contrast with the white flower. I would have preferred more selective focus, longer lens, but the Coolpix doesn't give me that much control.

I think this came out really well! The black and white looks good, (don't know what the color looked like) But it looks cold and damp, and the soft rose makes a nice contrast....2 Down, 364 to go...Leave it to you to start in a Leap Year, so you have to take an extra shot this year!!

I like the b&w with this. I also like how the rose is not in the center of the picture... Great photo Mark!
