28 November 2005

Faber Place, North Charleston SC

This is an Anhinga but thought it looked eerily like Nessie in Lochness. Is it the Lowcountry Lochness Monster in a drainage pond by my office with a fountain?....converted to B&W, unsharp mask and cropping only. The bird was swimming around the fountain in circles doing a strange back and forth dance with his neck kinda like a courtship dance you would expect...but it is November not April. It swims under water quite a lot and the feathers are not water repellent as when it exited water it was black with water and then jumped up in tree and held wings open like a buzzard cooling itself to dry its black feathers in sun and breeze. I wish I had my 1.5x teleconverter with me today as the optical zoom was not nearly enough.

Nice use of B&W. Surely the original nessie! ;-)

This is the typical shape of an Anhinga (Darter). A cormorant-like bird.

Cormorants ride real low in the water with a curved neck but the head and bill shape don't look right for a cormorant. So I'm not sure that's what it is.
