A very special shot to me.
After a long day of photographing bears, I decided to take a late night walk along the beach while I waited for my CF cards to download to the computer. Rather than sit in my cabin, I wanted a few moments of quiet solitude to myself out with Nature. The sun was at the horizon, and it was finally starting to get dark. As I stood and enjoyed the beautiful, Katmai scene, there were many bears in the far distance. Then, one bear started a slow walk up the beach toward me. Because it was almost dark, I was in doubt that my shooting with the 70-300mm lens (hand held) would be able to capture the moment. But oh, what a moment!
I backed up as the bear came within a half dozen feet or so of where I had been originally standing. She stopped there for a long, magically moment. That's when I realized just how close she really was. When she started to move again, I knew she was too close. So I cautiously left the beach. But I took with me a very special memory of Midnight in Katmai.
