Close Encounter

Lake Clark, Alaska

Having this wild Grizzy Bear run toward me while I was sitting in the grass was definitely a memorable experience. He reminded me of a large, curious dog.
Despite his quickly racing over to come within a couple of feet of me (far too close to focus with either one of my cameras), all obviously ended well.

This is one of the most amazing wildlife photos I have ever seen. The fact that the guide was frantic indicates the danger in this situation. You are one of the braves souls I know, Liz. Big Vote!!

Liz Bickel15-Aug-2007 18:16
In all honesty, the bear only came within 4 or 5 feet, but it certainly felt like 2 feet! He wasn't displaying aggression - only curiosity, The guide's frantic clapping and yelling "Shooo Bear!" caused him to finally veer off. I got other photos as he came closer, but those are out of focus because my 70-300mm wouldn't handle such a close encounter. That's okay. I'm very happy with this shot. Plus the incident ended up being a good memory & not a bad one.
