Debbie, I feel more comfortable with my hand there. I guess you could call it "photographer style". The hand on Big Bertha helps me feel in connection while shooting. I use my hand as a guide. Although the 600mm has IS, I feel the hand also adds a little assistance in dampening excess vibrations.

That was also shot before Big Bertha had her Wimberley head.
