One of the first described species has a color pattern reminiscent of the red coats of early British soldiers, hence the common name. These beetles feed on nectar and pollen, as well as, predating other small insects. Tiny insects (about 1/2 inch in size), they are related to fireflies but do not glow. Highly desired by gardeners as biological control agents, they are most useful in late summer when aphids abound, and other predatory insects begin to lay their eggs. Soldier beetles do not eat plants, mar foliage, or bring harm to the garden. I welcome them to my garden.
