The First Day of Meteorologist Fall 2011

An "in-between" season
while waiting for the Missouri River to flood.

**********************

"Parkville Missouri’s September 2011 flooding was part of a historic Missouri River flood triggered by extreme weather and massive water releases from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Record snowpack and spring rainfall: In the spring of 2011, the Rocky Mountains of Montana and Wyoming received 212% of normal snowpack and near-record spring rains in central and eastern Montana This led to an unprecedented amount of runoff into the Missouri River basin. In May 2011, almost a year’s worth of rain fell over the upper Missouri River basin, with some areas seeing rainfall 600% above normal. To prevent dam overtopping, the Corps began releasing record volumes of water from major dams, including Garrison Dam (152,000 cubic feet per second on June 1, 2011 — more than twice the 1997 record) and Gavin’s Point Dam. These releases continued into August, sending a continuous surge of water downstream.

Historic river flow: The total runoff above Sioux City was predicted at 54.6 million acre-feet, the largest in recorded history, surpassing the 1997 flood. The floodwaters, carrying the Corps’ controlled releases, reached Parkville in September, inundating the historic downtown and threatening century-old buildings

The town’s proximity to the Missouri River — a key trade route in the 1800s — meant it was directly in the path of the flood surge. Parkville’s 2011 flood was the result of a perfect storm of extreme snowmelt, record rainfall, and massive, sustained water releases from the Missouri River dams, creating one of the most severe river floods in U.S. history."
