The normal high for this date in October is 62 degrees Fahrenheit.
Today - even with a thick cloud cover - the high was 84 degrees.
The local weather forecaster said that without the clouds, the tempt probably would have reached 95.
Weird weather.
Although we had our first killing freeze of the season back on October 15th, all of the summer flowering plants left outside on the deck survived and continue to flower. Of course, we did cover everything we could for the one night when it dropped to 29 degrees and hoped for the best. Covering them obviously worked. I was very surprised.
Since then, they have been on their own, with tempts occasionally dipping close to but not hitting freezing again. Most of the days and most nights, however, have been above normal for the past 2 weeks after the one "Killing Freeze". Due to the cut on my hand, I haven't groomed any of these plants since the hard freeze. So, although still in bloom, the leaves & form don't look as good as back when I was taking care of them.
I think the above petunias, trailing along our deck, are pretty. I like this variety with their huge 3" flowers.
Normally, in the KC Metro, you won't ever find any outside petunias healthy and blooming
freely in late October like this. But the country no longer lives in normal weather times.
