"What began as a jubilant rally Saturday for Donald Trump days before he becomes the official Republican presidential nominee ended in mere minutes with the former president bloodied and a suspected would-be assassin shot dead by the Secret Service.
There was also one spectator killed and two others who were critically injured in the shooting at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania." AP

'Overall, the shooting of Trump is part of a rising tide of political violence in this nation. This nearly decade-long eruption has coincided with a wave of starkly polarized rhetoric and misinformation online. Today’s dark moment is further proof that the toxic political climate shows no sign of breaking."
"Trump’s campaign rallies have frequently witnessed violence or the threat of it, though not in the past directed at the candidate. Protesters demonstrating against Trump have been assaulted, and Trump himself has encouraged attacks against them.
"The most serious incident of political violence in recent American history occurred on January 6, 2021, following a Trump rally in Washington, D.C., when a crowd incited by Trump attacked and sacked the U.S. Capitol, bloodying police officers and disrupting Congress. Some protesters erected a gallows, carried zip ties, and said they were hunting for then–Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence." The Atlantic
Authorities identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pa. Voter status records showed he was registered as a Republican, The Washington Post has reported.
