Now Indoors for the Second "Winter"
I first got this plant back in the Spring of 2022.
Surprisingly, it survived last Winter's season in our Solar Room that frequently got too cold (even with heaters going full blast) for most warm weather plants to survive. I say surprisingly because Sunpatiens seems to be very sensitive to cold and will turn to mush if the tempts dropped below their comfort level. For some reason, this one didn't.
I added other sunpatiens varieties to our deck this past Spring & Summer; plus, also put this one outside where it stayed right up until the first string of hard freezes in October. When the local weather warned that a hard freeze was on the way, I brought this plant (and a new lavender one) into the Solar Room along with all of the hibiscuses.
Both Sunpatiens have been doing very well in the Solar Room so far: especially this one that is an annual that bloomed for its second season. The ones that I left outdoors have long been killed off by the cold weather.
So far, the tempts in the Solar Room have been mild (above 55 F); even when the weather outside has seen tempts in the low 20's. However, Solar Room tempts will probably drop as we go deeper into cold weather season. In between the bitter cold, we've had some nice, warmer outdoors weather this Fall. However, history has proven the months of December through March in the Solar Room to be very hard on warmth loving plants. Many don't survive. I expect the same this year.
Although I hope this one survives another Winter, we'll see. After all, it is an annual that has seen two Summers. Meanwhile, we're currently enjoying an explosion of pretty flowers like the ones above. At the moment, this is a very happy plant with only a very few yellow leaves from the change of seasons. If it makes it through the Winter, the foliage will return to totally green again.
