There is a Worm in My Flowers 8-15-23

What is it???

Could this be what has been chewing on my petunias?
Obviously, yes.

I originally thought that the odd damage to so many of my flowers was being done by Japanese Beetles. That was until I found this caterpillar crawling out of one of the ragged blooms. How did I miss seeing this before? He's pretty big. I check my plants very closely every single day. This is a new pest for me... So far, he's the only caterpillar I've found. But I also haven't seen very many Japanese Beetles either. However, so many plants have so much damage. Something strange is going on. And I have a feeling this may be part of it.

Beautiful caterpillar!!! It looks like it could be one of the Cucullia species, which feed on leaves of Asteraceae but I have never seen extensive damage by Cucullia species such as you described. Do you have slugs/snails around your area, or earwigs? The damage seems much more likely to have come from them.

Now what a shame Lumpy doesn't like to eat caterpillars, two problems solved

What a beauty! Maybe a tobacco budworm moth caterpillar? Very nice macro.
